I like wine, but my friends make fun of me because I enjoy sweeter wines.  Why is that such a bad thing?

Dear J.P..

Is the "bad thing" your friends making fun of you, or the type of wine you like?  I say, it's your friends.   Because, none of us (and I mean NONE) were born knowing about wine, and most of us started with sweeter wines.  There is nothing wrong with the wines you enjoy.  Nothing.  

But, if you like wine, there seems to be a natural progression with wine tasting. 

• The more you sample different types of wines, your tastes will change.  You'll start to notice tastes beyond "dry" and "sweet"

• When you start to put wine and food together, your tastes will take another step, generally toward drier wines.

• The really great news is that when you get to this point in your tasting - the WORLD of wine is open to you!  You can enjoy it all (even the sweeter wines) and there's no making fun of that. 

Keep curious.  Try new wines!  Your adventure is just beginning.
