Upson's has "bean" Roasting Coffee since 1984.

How we got started

There are so many parallels between good wine and good coffee.  In 1982,  that became obvious when we were introduced to an amazing man, Carl Diedrich.  Carl and his wife were fifth generation plantation owners (in Guatemala and Mexico) and they were green coffee importers (selecting high grown Arabica coffees from around the world).  But,  the most important element was that they designed and built coffee roasters. They were one of a handful of people in the United States that truly understood every aspect of coffee from plantation to cup.  With every coffee roaster Carl built, that special group of professionals grew.  With our roaster we were to become one of less than fifty small independent roasters in the country at that time!   It's amazing how the industry has grown since then!  But, what has not changed is our original focus.  Unlike other Coffee Roasters, we have deliberately chosen to stay quietly small and selective in the amount of coffee we roast.  We've never felt we could control quality and freshness if we got too big - so each week we roast just enough to sell in our store or to fill special orders.  Now, we delight in the fact that we're now seeing the second generation of coffee customers enjoying our coffees (our customers grown children).   We invite you to stop by our store on roasting day and enjoy the seductive aromas of Upson Coffee as it roasts.

There is marvelous diversity to the coffees we roast, each one has its own unique cup characteristics. They're so good that we have never considered flavor coating them (sorry, no hazelnut here).

There are four important factors that contribute to a great cup of coffee.

  • Start with exceptional Quality Beans (we only roast High Grown Arabica species coffees).  If the quality is superior - there is no need to blend, except to create a style.

  • Roasting to compliment the individual characteristics of each unique coffee bean.  Our coffees have amazing rich and substantial cup qualities, without need to "dark roast" to get flavor.

  • Freshness - it is critical.  The oils that develop during roasting (as seen in the picture above) will go stale or rancid (just like a potato chip), and will effect the taste of your coffee.  We encourage you grind your coffee as you use it, and to buy only what you will use in a week or two.

  • Brewing and storage is the important role you play (brew to a strength that you have a finish).

Coffee is still the beverage that starts our day in a savoring way.  At about 12 cents a cup it's still one of the best simple pleasure to wake up to!  Here are our POUND and half pound prices.
